Chester County police officers responded to a report of an armed barricaded man in a home near Pottstown, PA at about 9 p.m. on Christmas. The man’s wife, who was not at home called the police.

Police report that 34-year-old Nathaniel Lewis locked himself in the home and fired shots at police and SWAT members.

However law enforcement officers say the standoff ended when an officer sang Bing Crosby’s hit Christmas song “White Christmas to Lewis over the telephone.

County prosecutor Thomas Hogan also took Christmas cookies to the officers during the standoff which lasted more than 9 hours.

“No rest for Chester County law enforcement over Christmas. Around 9:00 p.m. on Christmas, our SWAT operators had to leave their families and respond to an armed barricaded subject in East Vincent Township. Hogan put on Facebook.”

He went on to add  “Over a long and cold night, they kept negotiating with the man, who eventually started shooting at the police and around the neighborhood. A SWAT negotiator finally talked him into surrendering at 6:00 a.m. this morning by singing a Christmas carol for him. You can’t make this stuff up. This being SWAT, they ate the cookies, made fun of each other, and went home to their families, quietly satisfied with a job well done. All of Chester County says thank you. More news on criminal charges tomorrow.”
