Yesterday, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that an investigation is underway for possible links of interference in the 2016 presidential election between Russia and some people within the Trump Administration.
Comey acknowledged that the bureau doesn’t normally discuss ongoing investigations, but due to the ‘extreme’ public interest of this issue; he was authorized to speak up about the investigation that’s been going on since last summer.
Yesterday is the first time Comey has talked about this in a public hearing. The hearing is taking place with the House Intelligence Committee,
“This work is very complex, and there is no way for me to give you a timetable for when it will be done.”
The topic of Trump’s alleged wiretapping also came up during the heated hearing. This occurred while under questioning from the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff.
Comey responded, “With respect to the President’s tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI.”
The FBI director wasn’t the only government official to dispute Trump’s tweets about the alleged wiretapping from the previous administration. During last year’s election, Rep. Devin Nunes, a California Republican, and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee also stated the same thing during his hearing.
Trump tweeted his thoughts yesterday before the hearing took place and became Monday morning news. “The real story that Congress, the FBI, and others should be looking into is the leaking of Classified information. Must find leaker now!”
Comey also responded to Trump’s belief that the Obama administration engaged in McCarthyism,
“I try very hard not to engage in any isms of any kind, including McCarthyism.”
Last year the FBI director testified in front of Congress over the Hillary Clinton email scandal a month from the election. So, there is no reason to believe that this hearing is about trying to hurt Trump, but there seems to be some information we don’t even know that has led up to this investigation.
In closing, there is a lengthy timeline of contacts and arrangements between Trump associates and Russian officials. For example, the Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn was mentioned, because of his past contact with the Russian ambassador. There is also information that show’s Wikileaks was possibly planning to go after Hillary Clinton’s campaign last year.
