Earlier that day, Maddow tweeted out to the world that MSNBC has obtained President Trump’s tax returns, concluding her tweet with “(seriously)”. These documents, which may have been obtained illegally, were “(seriously)” a joke. Not only were these forms from 2005, but they also went on to prove that President Trump paid his fair share of $38 Million in taxes that year alone. This amounts to a whopping 25% of Trump’s income paid to taxes – a much higher than those paid by his counterparts. Former President Barack Obama paid just 18.7% of his income to taxes in 2015, while in 2014, Senator Bernie Sanders paid only 13.5%. Rachel Maddow confirmed the journalist who obtained these documents as David Cay Johnston. Johnston claims these documents came in his mail anonymously, stating, “There is absolutely nothing improper about journalist, if you haven’t solicited something, getting it over the transom”. He also goes on to insinuate that the most important information about this tax return is that if President Trump wanted to end the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), he would have paid taxes at a lower rate than the bottom half of tax payers. Precisely due to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) which disregards the negative income by paying more in taxes, leaving President Trump to pay $38 million in taxes for 2005. Johnston claims the 24% that he believes trump actually paid is among the same that married couples pay with two incomes of about 400 k a year. Many Americans felt uneasy during the election cycle, being that President Trump refused to release his tax records – though doing so is not required to hold office. During one of many debates with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during the election year, President Trump had stated, “I will release my tax returns against my lawyers wishes, when [Hillary Clinton] releases her 33,000 emails that have been deleted”.  Clinton ignored the email request, arguing that Trump won’t release his tax returns because, “maybe he isn’t as rich or charitable as he claims, or maybe he has something to hide”. But as we can see, President Trump has certainly paid his fair share. The White House responded to this leak by issuing the following statement…
