Elon Musk and his fear of AI: We Must Become Cyborgs

The real-life Tony Stark is known for his ability to see the future and become one with the future.

Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX (he almost doesn’t need an introduction), two very large technological driven companies. Musk is also afraid of where technology is headed-specifically Artificial Intelligence, and the idea that machines will some day be more advanced than humans.

During his talk on Monday at the World Government Summit in Dubai where he also launched Tesla in the United Arab Emirates, Musk argued that combining human flesh with metal is the future of humanity if we want to survive against AI technology.

He gave a speech that went over this topic and why he believed this is the future, and why he believes it’s going to happen, “Over time I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence,” He continued, “It’s mostly about the bandwidth, the speed of the connection between your brain and the digital version of yourself, particularly output.”

Musk explained that computers communicate at “a trillion bits per second”, versus humans who can only do this at about 10 bits per second.

This isn’t the first time Musk has shared his fears about AI.

In 2014 he gave a speech to students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) he, made some comments on this subject, “I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. See we need to be very careful.” He also suggested government oversight, “I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish.”

Also, to add to his comments and worries about AI he has even donated $10 million to the Future of Life Institute (FLI). An organization that according to its site is “focusing on keeping artificial intelligence beneficial to humanity.”

During his speech this week he still touched on his fear of “deep AI”. He described AI has the possibility to be “Smarter than the smartest human on earth” a “dangerous situation”.

Even though Musk’s solution might sound like something from a scientific movie, it’s true science is heading that way.
